Beacon Hill

In a city brimming with historic neighborhoods, Beacon Hill is perhaps the city’s most historic. Like most of Boston, Beacon Hill was significantly reconfigured to cope with a rapidly growing city. It’s original 3 hills were reduced to one and that hill was reduced nearly 100 feet as tidal marshes were filled to create more land.

Lined with crooked brick sidewalks and historic gas lights, Beacon Hill is Boston’s quintessential neighborhood that mixes grand federal-style mansions on its North Slope, with somewhat more modest single-family homes, condominiums, and apartments on its South Slope. Picture-perfect Charles Street is the neighborhood’s vibrant commercial center. Located on what is called ‘the flat of the hill’, Charles Street is a eclectic mix of residences, unique shops and a variety of restaurants that will satisfy any palate.

Beacon Hill is capped by its most prominent feature – the gold dome of the Massachusetts State House. Designed by Charles Bullfinch and completed in 1798, the Massachusetts State House is the architectural model for many other state capitals that were subsequently built throughout the United States.

With easy access to the Charles River, the Public Garden, Boston Common and downtown, Beacon Hill has the look and feel of an historic colonial village despite it’s location in the heart of a major metropolitan city. It’s this unique juxtaposition that makes the neighborhood one of Boston’s most popular for residents and visitors alike.
